Es muy importante para procedimientos como el recubrimiento y la unión, en los que un adhesivo debe formar la mayor área de contacto posible para maximizar la adhesión. Cuando el lí-quido es agua, la [hidrofilia](https://www.thierry-corp.com/es-mx/plasma-knowledgebase/hidrof%C3%ADlico?hsLang=es-mx) es el término más comúnmente utilizado. La humectabilidad es una función directa de la [energí-a superficial](https://www.thierry-corp.com/es-mx/plasma-knowledgebase/energ%C3%ADa-superficial?hsLang=es-mx). Como regla general, cuanto mayor sea la energí-a superficial de un material, más se esparcirá el lí-quido sobre la superficie. La [activación por plasma](https://www.thierry-corp.com/es-mx/plasma-knowledgebase/activaci%C3%B3n-de-plasma?hsLang=es-mx) aumenta la humectabilidad al aumentar la energí-a superficial de casi cualquier material. La humectabilidad se puede cuantificar midiendo el ángulo de contacto de una gota. Cuando los ángulos de contacto están por debajo de 90°, generalmente es suficiente para la mayorí-a de las aplicaciones técnicas.
