What is plasma?

Plasma is often treated as the fourth state of matter, next to its solid, liquid and gaseous state. As a matter of fact, plasma accounts for more than 99% of all visible matter in our universe. Plasma is a result of increasing energy input, changing from solid to liquid to gaseous to plasma, fragmented down to gas and excited gas molecules as well as ions, free electrons and high-energetic molecule fragments. In nature plasma is found in lightning bolts, northern lights, the sun and so on. Plasma therefore is matter on a highly unstable energy level, which makes it a perfect candidate to change properties of solid materials, e.g. the surface energy. The different plasma technologies

Plasma is excellent when pointedly merging materials or modifying surface properties of materials on a molecular level. Plasma technology can be applied in numerous fields with the number growing as technology proceeds. There are two different systems within this field of technology:


Low-pressure plasma technology

Here, gas is put into a vacuum chamber and induced by energy to transform into plasma with which surfaces are modified. Cleaning, activating, (reactive ion) etching and coating of two- and three-dimensional parts, even powder, are the effects that are possible in this plasma technology. Micro-sandblasting with ions ablates surfaces, ionized gas reacts in specific chemical ways with an objects surface while UV rays break long-chain carbon compounds. A variation of the process parameters (pressure, time, etc.) changes the operating principle of the plasma.

Atmospheric-pressure plasma technology

In this system, gas is stimulated by high voltage under atmospheric pressure and therefore ignited. The plasma is then emitted through the tubes and nozzles by compressed air. In the plasma ray, there are reactive particles that activate and fine clean surfaces. The grade of cleaning with plasma is relatively high since dirt particles are converted into their gas phases and blown away. Metal, plastic, glass and ceramic can be cleaned, activated, pretreated, coated, etc. with atmospheric-pressure plasma in different ways, depending on the exact surface material.
